NYS To Receive $4.5M in Unemployment Grant

Governor Paterson announced that the New York State will receive $4.5 million in Federal grant for 2009 under the national Reemployment and Eligibility Assessment (REA) initiative of the US Department of Labor.

The REA was launched to help people receiving unemployment to get back to work faster by providing them with individualized job search and training services. The money comes from federal funds that support the administration of unemployment insurance.

Since the disaster happened many have been left unemployed but the Disaster Unemployment Assisatance program is available for people who've been badly effected by what's happened.

To qualify for the assistance you must live or work in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus or Erie counties and be ineligible for standard unemployment insurance. Here are some reasons for unemployment that might make you eligible to receive Disaster Unemployment Assistance:

You were injured in the disaster and are therefore unable to work, whether you are an employee or self-employed person.
Your work transportation is not available because of the disaster.
You cannot get to your workplace because you must travel through the affected area and are unable to do so.
You are out of work because the Federal government took over or closed the place where you worked.
You were about to begin working, but couldn't because of the disaster.
You are now the main bread winner or major support for a dependent household because the former head of the household died or was incapacitated in the disaster.
Your office or workplace was damaged, destroyed, or you can't get there because of the disaster.

To apply for the Disaster Unemployment Assistance, you need to file for regular unemployment insurance by calling NYS Department of Labor's free telephone line at 1-888-209-8124.

Tell the representative that you are filing due to the August storms and you're current status as unemployed. If you are not eligible for regular unemployment insurance benefits, you will be sent an application for Disaster Unemployment Assistance.

If you complete the telephone filing process without speaking to a representative, please call 1-866-642-7227 and ask for a Disaster Unemployment Assistance application.
